Dorothy Spence – Owner; yoga teacher
Dorothy opened the doors of 108 Yoga in May 2009, leaving behind the corporate business world, and fulfilling a long time dream. For Dorothy, 108 Yoga is a special space to come and explore, connect and rediscover the joy and vitality in life.
Dorothy received her yoga teacher certification in Halifax and studied Vipasana meditation in Quebec. She continues to upgrade her skills through the teachings of Rod Stryker.
A professional engineer, with a Masters in Business Administration, Dorothy also owns a consulting company, Growth Matters Inc., helping business leaders grow.
Nancy Hunter – Senior Yoga Teacher and Director of Yoga Teacher Training
Nancy has always been interested in helping people make improvements in their quality and enjoyment of life. Nancy came to Yoga from a background in community development, social justice and health promotion. She attained her Yoga Teaching Certification from Therapeutic Approach in Halifax and has a total of over 1500 hours of training. She is among the first group of students in the world to be taught Yoga Therapy outside India with the KHYF (www.khyf.net) and regularly travels to India and the United States for continuing education. Nancy is a direct student of Kausthub Desikachar.
As a teacher, Nancy is knowledgeable, warm, funny and makes everyone feel very comfortable. She encourages students to practice in an intelligent way and has a special kinship with those who may be a little intimidated by Yoga.
Heather Jackson – Yoga teacher
Heather completed the Calgary Yoga Passage 250 hour teacher training. Her training in Ashtanga and Hatha yoga, influences her style of teaching, allowing students to explore new postures, meditation and body awareness. She constantly strives to learn more by attending workshops and seminars with experienced yogi’s David Swenson, Shiva Rea, and Ayruvedic practitioner, Aadil Palkhivala.
Krista Watters – Yoga teacher
Krista’s style of yoga has been influenced from years of practicing Ashtanga and Vinyasa Flow in Vancouver and Hawaii. Her advanced teacher training is under the instruction of Rod Stryker of Para Yoga. Krista helps her students feel the deeper wisdom of yoga?finding happiness and fulfillment in life once you step off your yoga mat. She is committed to living from her heart and honoring the wisdom that surrounds her everyday – trusting the wisdom of the body and allowing the breath to lead.
Elizabeth VandenBerg – Yoga teacher
Elizabeth completed her teacher training program in Ashtanga and completed another 200 training hours in Costa Rica. Her teaching reflects her own practice while helping students find their own yoga with a light heart. Most recently, having a child has taught her that every moment on the mat is precious, but more importantly, a true practice is one that is not limited to the physical but is integrated into every aspect of your life.
Courtney Trowse – Yoga teacher
Courtney completed her yoga teacher training at Therapeutic Approach Yoga in Halifax. Creativity, passion, laughter, and a zest for life infiltrate Courtney’s practices as she playfully encourages students to embrace challenge while honouring the experience in their own body. She delights in providing options and props to help maximize the benefits of yoga for her students.
Jannine Bieniek – Yoga Teacher
Jannine completed her 500 hour Certificate IV Yoga Teacher Training in Australia under the direction of John Ogilvie at Byron Yoga Centre. The exploration of the body and how we can challenge it in more ways than one has always intrigued Jannine. After an old knee injury flared up she started exploring gentle restorative classes as a way to stretch and strengthen the injury, leading her to create a balance in her classes between fitness, dynamic yoga and restorative practice.
Cody Unwin – Yoga teacher
Cody completed her yoga teacher training in Baja Mexico at Yandara Yoga Institute. She began practicing yoga for the physical benefits but soon realized that there was something more. Yoga became a part of her daily routine and she soon began to notice a deep change. Compassion, understanding, and acceptance are always present in her classes.
Liz Johnson – Yoga teacher
Liz’s journey with yoga began when she moved to Toronto to study at U of T. Looking for an alternative to the intimidating university gym, she walked into her very first yoga class, and soon became a regular. Liz completed her 500-hour teacher training at the Byron Yoga Centre in Australia. The things that are important in Liz’s life and practice are compassion, patience, playfulness and a sense of adventure – values that she aims to bring to her teaching.
Sarah-Jane Steele – Yoga teacher
Sarah-Jane received here yoga teacher training from Breathing Space in Halifax. Her teaching style reflects a precision for proper form and alignment with a balance of creativity. Her pace is considerate of the new student as she helps individuals create an ease in their postures, tune into their breath, listen to their body, practice without judgment, become accepting of their own tempo, and honor their body.
